Parapsychology and Paranormal Phenomena

Haunting Phenomena in Freiburg: A Collection of Cases and Sources covering 900 Years

Cases of so-called “hauntings” and “apparitions” have been reported over the centuries in a wide variety of contexts, and they continue to be reported. As a “fundamental taboo” within the human perception of reality, such occurrences represent an exceptional research topic that concerns numerous scientific disciplines (see, for example, the two chapters “Erscheinungen” and “Spukphänomene” by G. Mayer und E. Bauer in: G. Mayer/M. Schetsche/I. Schmied-Knittel/D. Vaitl (Eds.): An den Grenzen der Erkenntnis. Handbuch der wissenschaftlichen Anomalistik, Stuttgart: Schattauer, 2015).

From 1950 to the present, the IGPP has been investigating reports of hauntings and apparitions throughout Germany and Europe. The documentation and analysis of complex haunting phenomena or singular apparitions, which can often be integrated into the lives of the witnesses only with difficulty, made the IGPP known far beyond the city limits as a place for research into paranormal or occult phenomena.

However, the number and characteristics of those haunting phenomena and apparitions that have taken place directly in the city of Freiburg are little known. For the city’s anniversary “Freiburg 2020: 900 Jahre jung” [Freiburg 2020: 900 years young], case reports concerning occurrences in Freiburg were therefore compiled using various types of sources (e.g. literature on the history of the city, local legends and traditions, specialist parapsychological literature, relevant archive holdings, personal reports). The cases researched were processed, documented, analyzed and published in book form. This publication – “Freiburgs Gespenster: Spuk und Geister in der Stadt von 1800 bis heute. Ein Quellen- und Textbuch” – is now in its third edition.

This book shows how the reporting of hauntings and apparitions has changed over the centuries, how it has been reflected in written sources, and how such reports are treated and processed in the present day – including at the IGPP.

Based on this, research into further local historical cases and their documentation and processing will be continued on an ongoing basis.
