General advice and expert information on parapsychology and frontier areas of psychology

Since its foundation in 1950 by Prof. Hans Bender (1907-1991), the Institute has offered the interested public a free information and counseling service on the entire spectrum of parapsychology, frontier sciences and anomalistic phenomena, which are summarized under the neutral collective term “exceptional experiences” (ExE). This includes information on the spread and phenomenology of parapsychic experiences as well as expert knowledge on the development, methods, results and problems of interdisciplinary and international research into paranormal (‘anomalistic’) phenomena and exceptional experiences. The emphasis is on the more than 70 years of research and counseling work of the Freiburg Institute, which is reflected in our extensive research library and research archive. The Institute offers a special range of counseling and therapy services for people who are looking for help in coping with and dealing with disturbing or stressful “occult”, “psychic” and paranormal experiences (“mental health”).

Counseling for people with exceptional experiences

Our counseling service is available to all people who would like to report exceptional experiences (ExE). ExE are experiences that are commonly referred to as “supernatural”, “paranormal”, “magical”, etc. They have always been part of the spectrum of human experiences and are known in all cultures. Many people view ExE positively and are able to integrate them into their everyday lives. Under certain circumstances, however, they also trigger insecurities and fears that are not easy to deal with.

Counseling for spiritual and meditation-induced crises

Spiritual paths and practices such as yoga and meditation are very popular. Such practices can have a variety of health-promoting psychological and physical effects. Under certain circumstances, however, they can sometimes lead to unusual and stressful experiences or even crisis situations that require professional support and assistance. The aim of the counseling sessions is to provide clients with initial guidance in the event of a spiritual or meditation-induced crisis.
