The Journal of Anomalistics includes empirical research reports, general papers on methodological, conceptual, philosophical or historical aspects of science, review articles, commentaries and discussion papers as well as book reviews on the range of topics in anomalistics. These include, for example, parapsychology and psi experiments, paranormal belief systems, near-death experiences, out-of-body experiences, UFO reports, cryptozoology, astrology, complementary healing methods, reincarnation, the history, theory and sociology of science, skepticism and much more.
The first issue of the Zeitschrift für Anomalistik appeared in 2001 and was published by the Gesellschaft für Anomalistik e. V. (GfA, Society for Anomalistics) with three issues per year. The editor responsible in the first few years was the sociologist Edgar Wunder, followed by the philosopher Gerd H. Hövelmann (from 2009-2017). In 2017, the psychologist and IGPP employee Gerhard Mayer took over as editor. Since this time, the journal has also accepted articles in English in order to reach an international readership and authorship.
Since the 21st volume in 2021, the Journal of Anomalistics has been published under the joint editorship of the GfA and the IGPP. There is an English and a German abstract for each article and the title of the journal has been supplemented by the English translation of the original title: Journal of Anomalistics / Zeitschrift für Anomalistik. The journal is currently published with two issues per year and all articles are freely available as PDF documents (open-access).
