The first step of the project involved using futurological scenario analysis to examine different scenarios of ‘first contact’ between humanity and an extraterrestrial civilisation, with a particular focus on the potential social consequences. To make well-founded predictions about how individuals, social subsystems or humanity as a whole would behave in the event of contact with an extraterrestrial civilisation, various sociological, socio-psychological, anthropological and historical findings were used.

Exosociology – Extraterrestrial Civilizations and the Consequences of First Contact
The analyses fall within the research perspective of exosociology (‘exo-sociology’), which was outlined over 30 years ago by the US sociologist Jan H. Mejer. However, it generated virtually no resonance in the scientific community and largely fell into oblivion. The main aim of the monograph “Die Gesellschaft der Außerirdischen – Einführung in die Exosoziologie” [Meeting the Alien. An Introduction to Exosociology], written by Michael Schetsche and Andreas Anton and published by Springer VS Verlag in early 2019, was therefore to revisit the fundamental preliminary considerations on exosociology, build upon them, and add an empirical perspective by combining them with the results of the scenario analysis. Further book and article publications followed.
From the outset, one of the project’s main challenges was to combine interdisciplinary social and cultural science considerations with natural science findings to create an overall, stringent view. For instance, some of the project work involved reconstructing the current state of knowledge and discussion on the subjects of ‘extraterrestrial life’ and ‘extraterrestrial intelligence’ within the fields of astronomy, astrophysics, and astrobiology. Another part of the project entailed a social and cultural science-based investigation into the prerequisites for the radio astronomical search for extraterrestrial intelligence (SETI).
Accordingly, the core theses of the project are multidisciplinary:
According to the latest scientific findings, it now seems more likely than ever that the Earth is not the only living planet and that humanity is not the only intelligent species in the universe.
Traditional SETI research sometimes operates with questionable assumptions that unnecessarily restrict the search for extraterrestrial intelligences.
‘First contact’ could have serious consequences for humanity. In addition to scientific and ideological consequences, we can also expect global political, economic and religious upheavals.
These consequences could also be so drastic because humanity has so far been extremely ill-prepared for contact with an extraterrestrial civilization.
In 2022, Springer-Verlag offered the authors the opportunity to publish an English translation of the volume. The publisher produced a rough translation, which was checked and revised by the authors. Fortunately, the final editing was carried out by the renowned British SETI scientist John Elliott, who also wrote a foreword for the English edition of the book, which was published in mid-2023 under the title Meeting the Alien. An Introduction to Exosociology.
The project will be continued with the aim of establishing the concept of exosociology in both public and academic discourse, thus giving the associated research questions more legitimacy and encouraging further studies in this field.
